What exactly is an IUL?

An indexed universal life policy does two jobs at once. First, it pays a death benefit whenever it is needed, for life, generally income tax free to your beneficiary. Second, part of each premium builds a cash value account credited with interest tied to a market index, with a floor that protects you in down years. Funded properly over a long horizon, that account becomes a pool you can borrow against for a business, a college bill, or supplemental retirement income, without the market risk of investing directly.

Why go independent?
A captive agent can only sell you one company. I compare top rated carriers side by side and get paid the same either way, so the winner is whoever treats you best.

Why People Choose It

Built in advantages.

Coverage for Life

The death benefit does not expire while the policy stays funded.

Index Linked Growth

Cash value participates in index gains up to a cap or participation rate.

Zero Percent Floor

Down markets credit zero. Market losses cannot shrink your credited value.

Tax Advantaged Access

Policy loans taken correctly are generally not treated as taxable income.

Flexible Premiums

Pay more in strong years, less in tight ones, within the policy's limits.

Tax Free Death Benefit

Life insurance proceeds are generally income tax free to beneficiaries.

Is It Right For You?

An IUL is worth a look if...

  • You want permanent coverage, not a term that expires
  • You can fund the policy consistently for the long run
  • You have maxed out other tax advantaged accounts
  • You want growth potential without direct market risk
  • You are a business owner planning for key person or buy sell needs
  • You want a supplemental income source later in life

Common Questions

Answers, before you even ask.

What is indexed universal life insurance?

IUL is permanent life insurance with a cash value account whose interest is linked to a market index such as the S&P 500. In up years your account is credited a share of the gain, and in down years it is credited zero rather than a loss. You get a death benefit that never expires plus a savings component you can access while you are alive.

How is IUL different from whole life?

Whole life credits a fixed, guaranteed rate and offers total predictability. IUL trades some of that certainty for higher growth potential tied to an index, and adds flexible premiums. Whole life is the safer, simpler instrument; IUL is the flexible one with more upside and more moving parts.

Can I lose money in an IUL?

Not to market declines. The floor is typically zero percent, so a crash credits nothing instead of subtracting. What can erode an IUL is underfunding it: policy charges still come out every year, so a policy paid too thinly can lapse. I illustrate that honestly before you sign anything.

How do I access the cash value?

Through withdrawals or policy loans. Loans taken correctly are generally not taxable income, which is why some people use a well funded IUL as a supplemental retirement income source. Take too much and the policy can lapse, so the withdrawal plan matters as much as the policy.

What are caps and participation rates?

They decide how much of the index gain you actually receive. A cap sets the maximum credited rate for the period, and a participation rate credits a percentage of the gain. Carriers set these differently and can change them within contract limits, so comparing them across companies is exactly the work I do for you.

Who is IUL actually right for?

People who need permanent life insurance, can fund it consistently for the long run, and want tax advantaged growth alongside the death benefit. If you mainly need the largest possible death benefit for the least money, term life is the honest answer and I will tell you so.
